On Saturday July 26, 2020 members from the Children’s Museum, Board, staff and kids, came together to kick off a new venture and collaboration with well-known local, Chef Howard.
Chef Howard Farro, a Stuart native, has a passion for gardening and cooking and now he is using his talent to inspire others. His love for gardening and cooking came at a very early age. His Aunt Helen taught him how to compost and germinate seeds while other family members shared his enthusiasm for cooking. Today, Chef Howard manages community gardens throughout Martin County. These ”Community Gardens” embody the true spirit of the title as they are maintained by volunteers, neighbors and garden enthusiasts.
Many of the gardens live on friendly neighbors backyards who have the space available to donate to the project. “On
Saturday a handful of volunteers arrived, all strangers to one another, but worked together to pull weeds, lay compost and harvest the garden adjacent to New Monrovia Park in Port Salerno, just one of the Chef’s local
gardens. Chef Howard leaves his gardens open and available for everyone in the neighborhood, free of charge” says Tammy Calabria.
The Children’s Museum is collaborating with Pleasant Plates Foundation, led by Chef Howard, to educate children on growing edible gardens and using the produce to create simple recipes. The Children’s Museum will
work alongside Chef Howard distributing garden kits to families in Port Salerno and Indiantown, spreading the joy of gardening in the hopes of seeing more community gardens growing sprouting up throughout the county.
